The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team can safely be called the Indian Premier Leagues’ (IPL’s) most successful teams. The Men in Yellow have successfully lifted the IPL title on three occasions (2010, 2011, 2018) apart from winning the Champions League T20 twice (2010, 2014). Skipper MS Dhoni remains the poster boy of CSK, with Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, and Dwayne Bravo being the other important players of King of IPL.

CSK- Chennai Super Kings History
IPL’s concept was relatively new for everyone. Even the idea of T20 cricket hadn’t sunk in the viewers. In January 2008, the first auctions took place. MS Dhoni became the costliest player in the auction for 1.5 million dollars. CSK bought experienced foreign players like Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey, Muttiah Muralitharan, Stephen Fleming along with the Indian core.
Team CSK played their first game on 19 April 2008 against Kings XI Punjab. The Super Kings (CSK) posted 240/5 in 20 overs and won the game by 33 runs. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side reached the finals but ultimately lost to Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals.
Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo are still a part of the CSK squad 2021, and even if they lost some players, they found replacements such as Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh. One cannot doubt the leadership qualities of cool-headed MS Dhoni who have been responsible for lifting the IPL trophy thrice, first in 2010 and in 2011 and 2018 respectively. The Super Kings (CSK) have also won the Champions League T20 twice, in 2010 and 2014.

CSK- Brand Value
The CSK franchise is owned by India Cements for 98 million dollars (676 crores) which makes it the fourth most expensive team in the league behind Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Former ICC Chairman N Srinivasan is the owner of the side as he was the managing director of India Cements Ltd.
However, the franchise of CSK was transferred to a separate entity named Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd, after the Supreme Court of India struck down the controversial amendment that allowed board officials to have a commercial interest in the IPL and Champions League T20.
In May 2013, Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of Srinivasan, was arrested on charges of placing bets on IPL matches. In February 2014, the three-member panel appointed by the Supreme Court of India enquired into the betting case indicted Meiyappan for illegal betting during the 2013 IPL, and the CSK squad was banned for a couple of years – 2016 and 2017 respectively. The ban was lifted and the team CSK returned in 2018.

2009 IPL: CSK
In 2009, CSK bought English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff for a whopping amount of 1.55 million dollars. However, he played only 3 matches and got injured. The IPL was shifted to South Africa due to the General Elections and the Super Kings reached the semifinals but couldn’t make it to the finals for the second time. The Anil Kumble-led Royal Challengers Bangalore beat them in the semifinals. Matthew Hayden was adjusted the player of the season for his 572 runs in 12 innings.
CSK’s 1st Win in IPL
CSK had a meek start to the 2010 season, winning only 2 out off 7 games. Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina’s immense contributions made them win the next 4 games out of 5. On the back of an inspired spell from Doug Bollinger of 4 for 13 in four overs, they defeated Deccan Chargers in the semifinals. CSK also went on to win the finals against Mumbai Indians by 22 runs.

CSK-The 2011 Victory
The Chennai Franchise retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay, and Albie Morkel for the 2011 season and bought back Mike Hussey, R Ashwin, Doug Bollinger, and Subramaniam Badrinath at the auctions. In the qualifying final, CSK faced Royal Challengers Bangalore and won by 6 wickets. However, Bangalore entered the finals again as the teams that finish at the top two spots get two chances to qualify. But, it was CSK again that took away the cake.
The Disappointing 2012 for CSK
Ravindra Jadeja was added to CSK for an outstanding sum of 2 million dollars. It was again a slow start for the Super Kings but they picked up their pace in the latter half of the 2012 tournament. CSK had to face the revamped Kolkata Knight Riders led by Gautam Gambhir in the finals. They set a target of 191 but Knight Riders chased it down with 2 balls and 5 wickets left.
Unfortunate 2013-2017 for CSK
CSK again made it to the finals in 2013, topping the table for the first time in six years. They also equaled Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 2011 record of 7 wins on a trot. In the first qualifier, they beat Mumbai Indians but had to play the same team again in the finals.
Mumbai Indians made 148/9 in their 20 overs. In reply, the Super Kings were reduced to 39/6 at one stage before an unbeaten half-century from skipper Dhoni took them close to the target. However, Mumbai Indians won the match by 23 runs to win their first-ever IPL title.
In 2014, before the players’ mega-auction, CSK retained Dhoni, Raina, Jadeja, Ashwin, and Bravo. At the auction, they bought Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Faf du Plessis, Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma among others. Chennai Super Kings squad finished third in the points table and qualified for the Eliminator against the fourth-placed Mumbai Indians. They won the eliminator and went on to play the qualifier against Kings XI Punjab. Punjab went on to score 226/6 in their 20 overs.
The CSK, in reply, could manage only 202/7 and were crashed out of the tournament. In 2015, they lost in the finals to Mumbai Indians. The team was banned for two years – 2016 and 2017.

CSK’s Powerful Comeback in 2018
The MS Dhoni-led side CSK made a comeback in 2018, retaining the core of the team. The league stage ended with the Super Kings in second place behind the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Chennai super kings (CSK) faced Sunrisers in both the qualifier and the final, winning both times and lifting the trophy for the third time.
Unlucky: 2019 for CSK
The IPL season 2019 was really an unlucky one for the team Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After a great early start, the team became the 1st to qualify for the Playoffs. It was the team’s 8th appearance in the finals. In the final, batting first, the Mumbai Indians made 149/8 in 20 overs. In reply, the king of IPL was able to make just one short of Mumbai’s total 148/7. CSK lost the title.
Forgetful: 2020 for CSK
The IPL 2020 was scheduled at U.A.E due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was one of those seasons which CSK would like to forget and learn from it. The M.S. Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings became the 1st team to be eliminated from the race of IPL 2020. Previously, the team had reached the knockouts in each of the 10 seasons in which it has been part of the IPL.
