Coach-less Indian Archery Team Starts Well at the Archery World Cup ’19

Playing without a coach, Indian compound archer Praveen Kumar commendably finished ninth in the ranking round of the World Cup Stage II on Tuesday. Praveen shot 704, eight points behind USA topper Matt Sullivan and got a bye into the second round.

Indian men’s team secured the fourth position in the qualification round of the World Cup Stage II on Tuesday. Lovejot Singh (21st) and Gurwinder Singh (44th) joined for a tally of 2091 points and secured the fourth position in the qualification round. Next, they will be playing against 13th seeded New Zealand.

In the women’s category, Parveena was at the highest spot from India at 20th position whereas her compatriots Monali Jadhav(24th) and Priya Gurjar (25th) combined to get sixth seeding as a team. Next, they will be playing against 11th ranked Singapore.

In the compound mixed pair, Praveen and Parveena will team up where India secured seventh seed to get a bye into the pre-quarters. The duo will play against Malaysia which is seeded four ranks below from them.

However, the Indian team’s performances have to be lauded, considering they have come without without the head coach Ved Kumar. He could not accompany the Indian contingent as his passport was not renewed in time. As a result of that, he failed to board the flight to Shanghai.

Another coach, Kailash was removed at the last minute as a result of a protest that he did not have the coaching credentials in compound archery.

In the absence of the coach Ved Kumar, recurve coaches, Sumesh Chandra Roy, and Sawaiyan Majhi will double up as compound coaches.
