Indian Women’s Compound Team, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami, and Parneet Kaur of India won gold at the World Archery Championships after defeating Mexico in the finals on Friday. The Indian trio won 235-229 to begin India’s gold medal account in the games.
Previously, India defeated Colombia in the semifinals 220-216 after defeating Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals 228-226. In a stunning upset, the Indian team delivered a surprising blow to defending champions Colombia with a 220-216 victory in the final four. This win secured their spot in the event’s final on Wednesday, showcasing the prowess of the women in blue.
India hopes in the compound men’s and mixed-team competitions, however ended following narrow losses. In the men’s event, Abhishek Verma, Ojas Deotale, and Prathamesh Jawkar were defeated 230-235 by the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
In the mixed section, Deotale and Jyothi Surekha suffered a loss 154-153 by the USA in the round of eight. Previously, Indian archers missed to gain team quotas for the Paris Olympics after losing in the quarterfinals of both the men’s and women’s recurve competitions.
The competition provides first-round tickets to the Olympics for the top three performers in group and individual events. Dhiraj Bommadevara, Rajat Chauhan, and Tushar Shelke’s men’s recurve team fell to India’s archrival Korea 1-5 (49-55, 57-57, 53-55).
The women’s recurve trio of Bhajan Kaur, Ankita Bhakat, and Simranjeet Kaur were defeated 2-6 (49-48, 52-53, 48-50, 54-57) by the Netherlands. They won the initial set to go up 2-0, but then lost the following three.
