Pugilist Vijay Kumar fought his way to a well-deserved victory, securing a spot in the semifinals of the ongoing 2023 Elorda Cup. In a highly competitive bout against Zholdas Zhenissov from Kazakhstan, Vijay (60kg) dominated his opponent, triumphing with a 3-2 split decision.
In the upcoming semifinals on Saturday, Vijay will face Beknur Ozhanov from Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, Keisham Sanjit Singh (48kg), Neema (63kg), and Sumit (86kg) concluded their Elorda Cup journey with bronze medals.
Keisham and Sumit, despite their diligent preparations, were unfortunately forced to withdraw due to last-minute changes to the original schedule, granting their opponents walkovers. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has filed an official complaint with the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation, protesting against this decision that resulted in injustice to the Indian boxers in the 2023 Elorda Cup. Meanwhile, Neema exhibited immense determination in her semi-final bout against Laura Yessenkeldi of Kazakhstan, but was unable to secure victory.
In the upcoming semifinals, Sushma (81kg) will go head-to-head against Fariza Sholtay, the 2023 World Championships bronze medallist from Kazakhstan.
