In the opening classical match of the FIDE World Cup Chess final in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday, Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa achieved a draw against the top-ranked player globally, Magnus Carlsen. The 18-year-old, Indian Grandmaster skillfully navigated the game with the white pieces, ultimately compelling a stalemate after 35 moves. Praggnanandhaa said after the game,
“I don’t think I was in any trouble at all,
In a subsequent exchange posted on FIDE’s ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account, Praggnanandhaa expressed his views.
“Rb8, I felt I should have done something there. But maybe this position is just solid and I don’t have anything. What I played there was not the best try but I could not find anything.”
The game 2 of the FIDE World Cup 2023 final featuring R Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen is scheduled for August 23, commencing at 4:15 PM. If the match ends in a draw, a tie-breaker will ensue, scheduled to take place on August 24th.
