The Indian women’s hockey squad fell short of securing an automatic slot in the 2024 Paris Olympics, having clinched the third position in the Hangzhou Asian Games. However, they have a new opportunity to qualify for the event, as India is set to host the qualifying tournament in Ranchi next year. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has relocated the Women’s Olympic Qualifiers from Changzhou, China, to Ranchi.
Discussing about Ranchi hosting the Olympic Qualifiers, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey stated:
“This is a huge event for our players, and we are thrilled that it will take place on our home turf as the support from Indian fans will undoubtedly fuel our players’ determination to secure their spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics.”
The Indian squad secured a bronze medal at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, marking a significant confidence boost for them in their pursuit of earning a place in the Paris Olympics. They achieved this by triumphing 2-1 over Japan in their recent encounter.
Prior to the Olympic Qualifiers, the Indian squad is scheduled to participate in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in Ranchi, taking place from October 27 to November 5. During this tournament, the host team will compete against Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand. This competition will serve as valuable preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics Qualifiers.
