Neeraj Chopra, hailed as India’s shining star, won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in the javelin throw final held in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday. His remarkable throw of 88.17 meters secured the coveted gold medal.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan secured the silver medal by achieving a distance of 87.82 meters, marking his best performance of the season. The bronze medal was claimed by Croatia’s Jakub Vadlejch, the world’s number 1 javelin thrower, who showcased his skill with an impressive throw spanning 86.67 meters.
The Indian star didn’t have a perfect beginning as his initial try resulted in a foul, while DP Manu opened with a throw of 78.44 meters, and Kishore Jena initiated with an effort of 75.70 meters. After the first round of attempts, it was Oliver Helander from Finland who held the leading position.
The top-ranked athlete globally, Vadlejch, claimed the lead with his second effort of 84.18 meters, rising to the top of the rankings. However, Chopra managed to surpass his competitors, securing his lead by making an impressive throw of 88.17 meters in his second attempt.
Neeraj achieves the distinction of being the first Indian athlete to secure the World Championships title. Prior to his achievement, Anju Bobby George, a renowned Indian long jumper, had secured a bronze medal, while Neeraj had personally clinched the silver medal in the previous year.
