Top 8 Dramatic IPL Super Over Encounters in the History of IPL

An IPL match is nothing less than a thriller movie. You can’t predict the climax of either and you are oozing with excitement throughout. The IPL in its 11 years and ongoing 12th season, has produced some nail biters, edge of the seat thrillers.

Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Rajasthan Royals – Cape Town (2009)

The IPL saw its first super over in its second season in 2009 which was held in South Africa. The Rajasthan Royals led by Shane Warne posted 150/8 and the Kolkata Knight Riders scored exactly the same.

KKR batted first in the super over and with the help of three consecutive boundaries got to 15 runs. The Royals hit a six of the first ball, a couple of the next and another six and a boundary of the next, winning the game with two balls to spare.

Chennai Super Kings Vs Kings XI Punjab – Chennai (2010)

Yuvraj Singh 43 runs innings helped KXIP to post 136 runs on the board but despite brilliantly 65 runs opening partnership of Parthiv Patel and Matthew Hayden CSK managed to tie the game.

Dhoni’s Super Kings batted first in the super over and only managed to get to 9 as both the wickets fell. There was even a ball left. The Kings XI Punjab hit a six of the first delivery but a wicket fell off the next. A boundary of the fourth ball saw Preity Zinta’s Kings win with two balls to spare.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Vs Royal Challengers Bangalore – Hyderabad (2013)

In a low scoring thriller, RCB went on to post just 130 runs on the board for the loss of 8 wickets. Just Virat Kohli and Moises Henriques made 46 and 44 runs respectively. On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to equal the score with the help of Hanuma Vihari’s 44*.

SRH only managed 3 of the first three balls but two sixes of fourth and the sixth delivery took them to 20. RCB managed only 15 in the super over, losing the game by 5 runs.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Vs Delhi Daredevils – Bangalore (2013)

This was second super over of the tournament and 2nd for the RCB in the same year, but this time the result was the opposite. Delhi Daredevils managed to post the 152/5 with a vital partnership of 30 runs by Irfan Pathan and Kedar Jadhav at the end of the game.

Whereas RCB’s Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers’ made a 103 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. They were cruising towards the win but suddenly wickets started to fall and in the end, they just managed to tie the game.

RCB struggled in the super over scoring only 3 off four balls. The batters hit 2 sixes off the next two balls taking the score to 15. DD lost the wicket of the first ball, hit a four and a six of third and fourth but a wicket of the last ball saw DD lose the game by 3 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Rajasthan Royals – Abu Dhabi (2014)

It was the second time both teams are meeting in over-eliminator as previously it was in the year 2009. Rajasthan Royals scored 152/5 and the Knight Riders also scored the same. In the super over too, KKR batted first and scored 11/2, RR too could score the same.

So, it was all up to which team has scored the most boundaries and it was the Rajasthan Royals. The Royals had scored the most boundaries in the game so they were declared the winners.

Rajasthan Royals Vs Kings XI Punjab – Ahmedabad (2015)

Both the team batted brilliantly as it was a high scoring game. Both the team managed to score 191/6. KXIP batted initially in the super over scoring 15/2 with the help three boundaries.


In reply, the Royals lost both the wickets on the first and the third delivery losing the game by 9 runs which is a huge margin considering the super over.

Gujarat Lions Vs Mumbai Indians – Rajkot (2017)

Gujarat Lions batted first and managed to put the decent total on the board i.e. 153/9 in 20 overs. In response, Mumbai Indians got the good start as Parthiv Patel made 70 runs but the team lost momentum in last few overs as its middle order collapsed which brought them to tie.

Mumbai lost both the wickets on the fourth and the fifth ball scoring 12/2. The Gujarat Lions were tamed by the Mumbai Indians. The Lions managed only 6 in the super over, losing the game by 6 runs.

Delhi Capitals Vs Kolkata Knight Riders – Delhi (2019)


Kolkata Knight Riders batted first and managed to put the incredible total on the board of 185/8 in 20 overs with the blasting innings 62 of just 28 balls from Russell. In response, Delhi Capitals was going well with a brilliant knock of 99 by Prithvi Shaw and were close to the target but lower order crumbled and Delhi Capitals managed a tie.

DC managed 10/1 in the super over. It was looking like Russell will win it for KKR but it was Kagiso Rabada’s brilliant yorker that got rid of Russell and DC won the game by 3 runs.
