India in Tokyo Olympics: There has been a dramatic rise in the number of Indian athletes who have qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games as compared to the previous Olympic Games (57 in the 2016 Rio Olympics). This year a total of 109+ athletes have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games across 15 sporting events.

The number is likely to increase as the qualification for several games is still under process. Government of India’s TOPS scheme & of course the determination of Indian athletes can be credited for this marvelous feat.

Indian’s performance in Athletics has never been at par in Olympics as compared to other events. But emerging athletes like- javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh have raised hopes this time around.

The Indian 4×400 mixed relay team will make its debut at Tokyo Olympics Games 2021. The team consists of Asian Games gold-medallist Muhammed Anas, VK Vismaya, Nirmal Noah, and Jisna Mathew. They qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after they finished third at the World Athletics Championships in 2019.

Equestrian: India in Tokyo Olympics

Fouaad Mirza is the first Indian equestrian to qualify for the Olympic Games in 20 years. Mirza booked his berth after topping the group in the individual event category at the South East Asia and Oceania qualifiers in November 2019.

Fencing: India in Tokyo Olympics

Bhavani Devi became the 1st Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics. The sabre fencer from Chennai sealed her spot for Tokyo 2021 through the Adjusted Official Ranking (AOR) method at the Budapest Sabre World Cup ( an Olympic qualifying event, in Hungary in March).

Gymnastics: India in Tokyo Olympics

Pranati Nayak is only the 2nd Indian woman (after Dipa Karmakar) gymnast to qualify for the Olympics. She qualified in May via the Asian quota.

Hockey: India in Tokyo Olympics

This will be the 20th Olympic Games for the Indian men’s hockey team. Currently, the Indian men’s Hockey team stands at fourth in the world rankings, while the women’s side will be making their third appearance in the Olympic games. (second in succession).

Both teams qualified in November 2019. Each of them will carry a 16-member squad.

Rowing: India Olympics

Indian rowers Arvind Singh and Arjun Jat qualified in the men’s lightweight double sculls event at the Asian qualifiers in Tokyo, Japan in May.

Nethra Kumanan became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics at the Mussanah Open Championship 2021 in April. Three other Indian sailors also qualified for the Tokyo cut in Oman. For the first time in the history of India’s Olympic journey, the Indian team will be participating in more than one sailing event – Laser Radial, Laser Standard, and 49er.

India never had more than 2 sailors at a single Olympics ever before.

A total of 15 Indian shooters has achieved Olympic qualification to date. This is India’s largest contingent at any game. Shooting is one of those events in which India hopes for maximum medals at the Tokyo Olympics 2021.

Youngsters like Divyansh Singh Panwar, Elavenil Valarivan, and Manu Bhaker have set the medal expectations quite high.

Table Tennis

Four Indian table tennis players qualified for the Tokyo Olympics at the Asian qualifiers in Doha in March. The squad includes the veteran Sharath Kamal (it will be his fourth appearance at the Olympic Games), G Sathiyan, Sutirtha Mukherjee, and Manika Batra.

Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra will also compete together in the mixed doubles after sealing their Olympic seat at the Asian qualifiers.

Four Indian shuttlers have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics as of 11 May 2021.

Judo

The last date for obtaining points to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2021 in judo is the 28th of June 2021. Shushila Devi Likmabam (Event -48 Kg) has mathematically assured her place in the games as of 20th of April 2021, but yet to assure the qualification.

Weightlifting

India’s superstar weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu made history as she became the one and only Indian weightlifter to qualify for Tokyo Olympics. She secured the 2nd spot in the Absolute Rankings.

India at Olympics: 1900 – 2016

The 1st medal for India came in 1900 at the Paris Olympic games. Norman Pritchard won a silver medal for British India in the Men’s 200 meters. In Independent India, the 1st Olympic medal was bagged by the Indian hockey team at the 1948 London Olympic Games. However, the 1st individual Olympic medal was won by Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav at the 1952 Helsinki Games in wrestling.

To date, India has won a total of 28 medals at the Summer Olympic Games. Hockey has been the most successful sport for the nation.
