His father Lakhwinder Singh once spoke about his son’s passion for the game.

“Shubman never liked any other toy. He always loved playing with the bat and ball. He used to play with the cricket bat and ball even during going to bed,” Lakhwinder told PTI.

“We fully supported him in achieving his dream to become a cricketer, dedicating 15 years to him to enable him to become a world-class cricketer. We even left our work and skipped several family functions including marriage ceremonies of our relatives so we could dedicate as much time as we could on him,” he added further.

His father, an agriculturist would ask the hired people to help on the farm to throw balls at Gill to help him practice batting. Lakhwinder was convinced of his talent and moved the family to Mohali and rented a house near the PCA Stadium.

While he was anonymously working out at the small academy opposite Mohali’s PCA Stadium, former Indian pacer Karsan Ghavri held a bowling camp for talented seamers where he needed kids to bat against his bowlers. And incidentally, that’s when young Shubman came into the picture.
