Early Days
Harmanpreet Singh was born on 6th January 1996 at Jandiala Guru township of Amritsar in a farmers’ family. Harmanpreet would be on his father’s tractor whenever he is off from his school and during his holidays he would help his family in farming.
Farming helped Harmanpreet to gain strength and endurance. Harmanpreet’s father encouraged him to do whatsoever his wish was. He started playing hockey at the age of 10. When he was 15-years old, he joined the Surjit Singh Hockey Academy with the hopes of becoming a forward.

Harmanpreet Singh first came in limelight during his Junior National Camps and tournament for his performance both as a defender and a drag-flicker. He then moved into the Junior Indian team with his consistent form and natural fitness.
He first played for India during the Sultan Johar Cup in Malaysia in 2014. He showed stupendous performances against countries like Australia, England, and Malaysia, which helped India lift the trophy. He was awarded the player of the tournament.
After his consistent performance in the junior circuit as well in the domestic league, he made himself a prominent member of the Indian team. The young drag-flicker was bought by Dabang Mumbai for $51000 in the Hockey India League which had foreign stars like Florian Fuchs, Kieran Govers, Jeremy Hayward, and so on.
He scored 5 goals in his first edition with Mumbai Dabangs which made the Dabang’s to retain him in their squad for the 2016 edition. He went on to win the Ponty Chadha award for the most promising player of the tournament in 2015.
Harmanpreet made India proud once again by clinching the Junior Men’s Asia cup 2015 where he stole the show by knocking 15 goals which indeed proved he is a rising star. His outstanding show helped him to be included in the Men’s National team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Harmanpreet gave a disappointing performance at the Rio Olympics 2016. His coach claimed that he had unperformed and had not done justice to the outstanding talent and prowess that he possessed as a player.
Out of 6 games, India managed to win only 2 but lost out on 3, which was a disappointing conclusion to their Olympics’ campaign.
